Kane: England Needs a “Wake-Up Call”

The UEFA Euro 2024 tournament kicks off this week, and England skipper Harry Kane hopes that his squad will buck up before their first match.

Following their 1-0 warm-up game loss to Iceland last Friday, 7 June – which saw fans in attendance at Wembley Stadium, London booing the home team – many regarded this as a sign of things to come for England at the Euros.

However, Kane believes that the defeat is a “wake-up call” for not only his team-mates, but also their supporters.

“This [loss] could be a nice wake-up call for everyone to realise it is not going to be as easy as people think,” the 30-year-old told a British outlet on Monday, 10 June. “There is a lot of work to do. Sometimes, you need this wake-up call.

“There are areas we need to improve, especially with our pressure,” he continued. “The group games are going to be very similar to this. We are going to have to defend well, especially the longer balls, and with the ball we need to be a bit more patient. It is one to look back on.”

England are scheduled to face Group C opponents, Serbia, at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany this Sunday, 16 June.
